Herisau, Switzerland, May 2, 2018- Australia U19 and New Zealand U19, debuting at World Championship level for the first time, hope to make their long trip north to Switzerland.
B-Division, Group C (10:00 CET): Austria U19 6:1 Australia U19
The opener of the B Division at the U19 Women’s Floorball Championship in Herisau marked another milestone for women’s Floorball as the team from “Down Under” celebrated their big debut in the junior’s premier event.
The Australian youngsters earned their spurs in the opening period, taking their Austrian counterparts into a goalless first interval. But the seasoned Austrians probed and soon found their way through the stubborn Aussie resistance, Milena Kasper proving the master key by notching an impressive brace. A real collectors’ item followed for Australia, however, with Annie Lean notching their first ever goal at the IFF Women’s Floorball World Championships, but the Europeans turned the screw to lead 4:1 going into the final period, before netting twice in the closing period to see out their opening match with a 6:1 triumph.
B-Division, Group C (13:00 CET): USA U19 0:20 Latvia U19
The second Group C game of the opening day saw Latvia U19 face the USA U19, and it didn’t take the Latvians long to take control over the game, with a quick-fire opening goal in the 2nd minute. From there on, they left precious little in the way of opportunities for their American counterparts to establish a foothold in the game, scoring five more goals in the first third, and a further eight in the second. Five minutes into the last interval, Latvia continued dominating the game with their 15th goal. MVP Anna Ankudinova was the standout performer with five goals and two assists in what quickly turned into a rout, the Latvians bringing the score to an impressive 20:0 before seeing out the tie to soar to the Group C summit. They are now in pole position to qualify for the B-Division semi-finals ahead of their last two group stage fixtures.
B
-Division, Group D (16:00 CET): Canada U19 2:10 Russia U19
Russia had a very strong game in the first interval and rapidly set the lead, scoring 3 goals in the first half. Canada did its best to keep up and managed to score once in the 19th minute.
In the second interval and despite the Canadian team being more reactive, they still scored another 7 goals, while Canada scored one.
Canada didn’t give up, kept fighting and took the Russian team into a goalless last period.
B-Division, Group D (19:00 CET): Hungary U19 5:1 New Zealand U19
Like for the Aussies, this was the first ever Women´s U19 WFC for New Zealand. Unluckily for them Hungary took the 1-0 lead already in the first period.
In the second period Hungary extended their lead to 2-0, but then the historical first Kiwi goal was seen. Hungary extended their lead to 3-1 before the period was over.
Despite of putting up a fight and even trying to score without a goalkeeper, New Zealand weren´t able to score more goals. However, Hungary took their chances and in the end won the match 5-1.
