The International World Games Association (IWGA) has today during its Annual General Meeting, in connection to the SportAccord Convention, published the International Federations selected for the Sports Programme of the 2021 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama in the United States.
The IWGA has now decided to have 30 Official Sports on the program for Birmingham. The Invitational Sports will be published later this year, and the building of the final sports programme will be done during the remaining year to define the different set-up for the sports. For Floorball this means if we can get an extended quota, as it is still unclear if we can have additional bed nights.
– I would like to thank the IWGA, its Council and President Mr José Perurena, for the trust shown to the entire Floorball family to again be included on TWG Sports Programme. This is a momentous success and proves Floorball´s ability to bring added value to The World Games, as was shown in the Wroclaw 2017 World Games, says the IFF President Mr. Tomas Eriksson.
In order to make The World Games 2021 in Birmingham a success, IFF will work closely with the United States Floorball Association (USFbA) and the Birmingham Organisation Committee (BOC), to popularise Floorball in the region prior to The World Games. Planning has already started on what actions need to be taken and actions are planned for the autumn, after meetings with the BOC. The IFF President feels that Floorball has an immense potential in the Americas and in Birmingham, Alabama in special, and IFF will do its outmost to enhance the growth of Floorball in the Americas, utilizing the TWG.
The IWGA will later in the year announce the sports programme of The World Games 2021, were IFF has proposed participation of both Men and Women. The IWGA has not given any indication of what quota Floorball will get in the games.
– The importance of the participation in Birmingham is elementary for Floorball, with the present ongoing process of the Olympic Games programme, as this is at the moment the platform where we can prove our value. It is therefore imperative for us to ensure a star level performance for Floorball in Birmingham. We need to guarantee that the sport is visible in the event and therefore need to work closely with the USFbA to achieve this. This is a yet another great achievement for Floorball, says John Liljelund, IFF secretary general
