When the world’s best floorball players gather in Malmö for the 2024 World Floorball Championships, it’s not just about the sport. Many different actors need to work together to create a sustainable event, and TCT Production plays a key role off the field. By focusing on reducing climate impact and choosing environmentally friendly alternatives, TCT shows that sports and sustainability can go hand in hand.
TCT is not alone in this commitment— the entire championship has earned the prestigious Sustainable Event certification, and Malmö and the organisers are now taking a major step toward a more sustainable future for sports events worldwide. TCT has contributed to this certification by setting high standards for quality and production. This is an important detail to ensure that the products are not only sustainable in appearance but also for the planet.
TCT works with printed products and aims to reduce plastic use by 70%. This is a tough challenge in an industry where PVC plastics, banners, and vinyls are still common materials. Daniel Serènus, the company’s CEO, realised that the industry he worked in needed to change when he sat on a jury for young entrepreneurship.
– I saw that many young people had completely different KPIs than what is standard in the industry I work in. We have done a lot over the years, but we are far from satisfied, says Daniel.
To create a sustainable sports event, the organiser cannot be the only one to take responsibility—partners must also get on board. What TCT has chosen to do is go beyond traditional solutions with single-use plastics and PVC materials, focusing instead on sustainable alternatives. For the WFC, they set the goal that 80% of the materials delivered should be reusable. This is especially relevant during the event when much of the material is only needed for a short period.
– It has been a challenge because many of today’s materials have not been tested or are not even available on the market. In January 2024, we started developing a completely new type of floor advertising made from 50% paper, which is part of our new product line, Ecofinity. We’ve had to create many innovations and rethink everything we do, says Daniel.
The Ecofinity decal (a picture or design printed on special paper) is a green innovation that is debuting in Malmö. All banners are made from PVC-free materials and will, after the event, be repurposed into reusable bags. In addition to the decals, some cardboard signs will be reused as packing material, while others will be transformed into new signs. The lanyards used during the event will also be made from recycled PET bottles. It’s an environmentally conscious solution that will live on after the championship and continue to make an impact far beyond the arenas.
TCT has long been a reliable player in the sports events industry, but by taking green initiatives, they are also setting a standard for sustainability in sports. By using reusable materials and plastic-free alternatives at events like the WFC 2024, floorball becomes an example of how to reduce environmental impact while continuing to create magical sports experiences.
– Despite all of this, we’ve only scratched the surface of what’s possible. In the future, we aim to be able to reuse 90% of the events’ signage material, the CEO of TCT Production concludes
We are very excited to see such pioneering steps taken in this championship tournament. It displays how TCT Production together with the local organising committee have embraced sustainability which aligns with the IFF strategy, Tero Kalsta, Sales & Sustainability Manager at the IFF summarises.
