The International Floorball Federation (IFF) recently held an impactful Coaching Development Seminar in Taraz, Kazakhstan, gathering over 30 participants for two intensive days of training and knowledge-sharing while empowering coaches across Central Asia.
This first-ever event in this region welcomed more than 30 enthusiastic coaches from across Central Asia, representing countries like Azerbajian, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and from eight cities across Kazakhstan – this event served as a landmark opportunity to cultivate and expand Floorball expertise in the region. Led by Floorball Coach Jürg Kihm and supported by experienced expert Tamuz Hidir (who is also an IFF CB Member responsible for the development in this region), the seminar combined theoretical insights with hands-on coaching practice, providing a comprehensive learning experience for aspiring and seasoned coaches alike.
Kazakhstan, which has had an established Floorball federation for nearly five years, is currently the only country in Central Asia with an official national Floorball governing body. Thanks to dedicated efforts, Floorball has gained a foothold in Kazakhstan, allowing the sport to begin reaching youth and sports enthusiasts in communities across the country. For other Central Asian nations – Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan – the path is just beginning. None of these countries currently has an established Floorball federation, and Floorball is still a young sport in these regions. However, with a growing interest from sports leaders, each country has recently taken its first steps in exploring and introducing the game to local communities.
The seminar highlighted the importance of expanding Floorball in regions with immense potential for growth. Central Asia, with a combined population of approximately 71 million people across Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan, presents a fertile ground for Floorball’s development. In comparison, some leading Floorball nations in Europe – including Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Slovakia, Norway, Estonia, Latvia, and Denmark – have a combined population of about 55 million. This stark difference underscores the opportunity that Central Asia holds for Floorball’s future.
The participants explored various facets of the sport, including modern coaching techniques, player development, and community engagement strategies. Both experts’ leadership, expertise, and enthusiasm were invaluable in guiding coaches through these essential areas. Their experience helped participants deepen their understanding of effective training methods and strategies tailored to Floorball’s unique dynamics, which they can now carry forward to their communities.
The IFF is committed to empowering emerging Floorball communities by facilitating such initiatives, which help establish the sport in regions like Central Asia. This seminar marked an important step in creating a supportive network of coaches who are now equipped to promote and grow the sport in their local communities. By investing in coaching and development, the IFF envisions a future where Floorball can thrive across Central Asia, fostering a strong base for regional competition and paving the way for eventual federation status in more countries.
