Either Thorengruppen or Pixbo will win the Champions Cup 2024. The final will be played at Wallenstam Arena in Mölnlycke, Sweden on Friday 26th of January.
Women’s Champions Cup title will be going to Sweden, again. Only Swedish club teams have won the title during previous years and although the format has changed yet again, this fact will not be changing just yet. This time the final will be played between two Swedish club teams, Pixbo IBK and Thorengruppen IBK.
Thorengruppen won the 2023 Champions Cup and are now looking to defend their title. Although that win was the first for Thorengruppen, many players had won the Champions Cup previously with IKSU. IKSU was crowned as the winner three times: in 2012, 2017 and 2019. The IKSU board decided to give up their place in the Swedish Super League (SSL) in 2020 after struggling with a tough financial situation. Many players then transferred to Team Thorengruppen. Thorengruppen got IKSU’s place in SSL after a legal appeal and many players who previously represented IKSU like Emelie Wibron, Amanda Delgado Johansson, Sofia Joelsson, Oona Kauppi and Veera Kauppi, continued their playing career in Thorengruppen.
Thorengruppen have been dominating the SSL since joining the league. They have been crowned the Swedish Champions three times during 2021-2023. This season they are on the top again and have not lost a single match. Pixbo are second in the table so both teams are fighting hard for the Swedish championship title and also for the Champions Cup title. These teams will also meet in the Swedish Cup final in February.
Pixbo are in the Champions Cup for the second time now. They participated for the first time in 2016 and won the event. Pixbo are also the reigning Swedish Cup champions from 2023 and this is how they secured their spot in this year’s Champions Cup. Just like Thorengruppen, Pixbo have many national team players in their roster. The Swiss goalkeeper Lara Heini was included in the World Floorball Championships 2023 All-Star Team together with defender and Pixbo captain Moa Andersson. Eliška Krupnová celebrated bronze medal with Team Czech Republic at WFC 2023 in Singapore. Rikke Hansen represented Norway and although the WFC did not go as expected for her team, she will be hungry for that CC title even more. In addition to Andersson, Klara Loneberg, Cajsa Elm and Alma Kilpeläinen were part of Team Sweden in Singapore and were crowned as World Champions.
Both Pixbo and Thorengruppen played solid quarter- and semi-finals winning all their matches. Thorengruppen beat Classic in the quarter-finals and Zug United in the semi-finals. Pixbo won against TPS in the quarter-finals and against Kloten-Dietlikon Jets- in the semi-finals. Scoring leaders from Pixbo are Klara Loneberg (11+13) and Emma Stenberg (17+6) while Emelie Wibron (11+6) has the most points from Thorengruppen.
