It was a big night for the Swiss Floorball Association when the Green Goal initiative of the Men’s World Floorball Championships (WFC) 2022 won a special prize from Sponsoring Switzerland.

Apart from organising a top-level sports event the World Floorball Championships 2022 pursued big goals also off the field of play. Under the motto “Green Goal”, the 2022 tournament was to be the first CO2-neutral floorball championships in history putting sustainability in an important role. The initiative has now been awarded the special prize in the category “Responsibility” by Sponsoring Switzerland as part of the Sponsoring Excellence Night 2023.

The jury recognized the initiative as follows: “With the Green Goal at last year’s WFC, swiss unihockey, together with its committed partners, put into practice a very innovative link between sponsorship and sustainability creating real added value in the process.”

Daniel Kasser, Secretary General of WFC 2022, is delighted with the award: “This award is a great recognition for the initiative and thank you to everyone who helped achieve our Green Goal: the fans, our partners and sponsors, and the whole team.”

The main goal of the Green Goal was to halve CO2 emissions per person compared to the WFC 2018 in Prague using innovative and creative measures, thereby emitting a maximum of 3,000 tons of CO2. For example, together with insurance provider Mobiliar, four extra trains were chartered from the Swiss railway company SBB, health insurer Concordia invited all 25,000 attending school kids to travel free of charge by public transport, and Fleurop had bags, gym bags and etuis produced from event branding material. Among other things, these measures resulted in 83% of the spectators travelling to the arenas by public transport or bicycle, thus making a major contribution to exceeding the targets for CO2 emissions per person. There was a minor setback but with an extremely pleasing justification: due to the significantly higher number of spectators than expected, the total emissions of 3019 tons are slightly above the total target of 3000 tons.
