On Tuesday, the board meeting of the Latvian Floorball Union (LFU) was held, where a new head coach of the Latvia’s Men’s National Floorball Team was selected. In the future, the national team will be led by the experienced Finnish floorball specialist Heikki Luukkonen, with whom a contract has been signed for four years, or two world championship cycles.
Luukkonen has received higher education in the fields of sports and psychology. He has a Professional Coaching Degree from The Sports Institute of Finland and a Top Coaching Diploma of Floorball from The Eerikkilä Sports Institute.
Luukkonen, who started his coaching career in 2003, has worked in Finland and Switzerland, achieving high results at club and international level. In 2015 and 2017 he won World Junior Championships as a Head Coach of Finland’s Men’s U19 National Team. In 2012, Luukkonen led the “SV Wiler-Ersigen” club to the Swiss championship title and, as an assistant coach, helped the country’s Men’s National Team win bronze medals at the World Championships. Since 2017, he has been working as a Head Coach of Esport Oilers, which is one of the leading clubs in Finland’s highest league.
