With its “Green Goal”, the World Floorball Championships (WFC) 2022 in Switzerland has a great goal in addition to the sport itself. The WFC 2022 is set to be the very first climate-neutral World Floorball Championship. Furthermore, there are plans to reduce CO2 emissions by more than half compared to the WFC 2018. Moreover, its commitment to protecting the environment goes even further. A brand new tool is helping interested clubs to take a first step to finding out how much CO2 is produced by all of their club activities and see where there are possibilities to save energy and avoid unnecessary emissions.

— What was decisive for us at that time was that we had set a benchmark with Prague 2018, which for the first time showed us what areas produced the greatest amounts of CO2 at a world championship. Based on this knowledge, we worked out all of the measures concerning the ‘Green Goal’ and, in our view, this knowledge is decisive in order to make the greatest impact, states Daniel Kasser, CEO of WFC 2022. Swiss unihockey already decided in 2019 that environmental sustainability should play an important role at the home tournament in 2022.

The Bern Capitals team had a similar starting situation. The Caps were the first Swiss sports club to become members of the UN Sports for Climate Action Initiative at the end of 2020; they appointed Mario Teuscher and Fabian Buser as the club’s sustainability delegates.
— At the beginning, we did not know how we should measure our CO2 footprint or what areas are actually important, Fabian Buser recalls the initial difficulties. And that is how a partnership began with swiss unihockey, to address these start-up issues. The solution was quickly found in the form of a CO2 calculator specially tailored to floorball clubs. myclimate stepped in as an experienced partner for implementation and programming.

— The challenge was mainly to develop a tool that is as simple and uncomplicated as possible to use, but that also provides the clubs with the most precise picture as possible of their CO2 emissions. While doing this, it was extremely valuable that the Caps were participating from the start and were able to provide the club view of things at every development step, declares Kasser.

— The calculator makes it possible for us to have an inventory of our emissions. That way, we can work on reducing them in a targeted way. The report that the climate calculator delivers is also a great help, comments Mario Teuscher who has already tried out the CO2 calculator and is very excited about it.

— Our goal for the WFC is to make a sustainable contribution that will last, even after the tournament. With the calculator, we have created a very promising basis that may even make an impact above and beyond the sport of floorball, adds Kasser who is also very pleased with the result.

The CO2 calculator is available to all interested clubs on the WFC 2022 website. After entering all the data or average values, the clubs will receive a detailed report on their CO2 emissions as well as some first tips for measures that can be implemented to reduce them.
