The number of licensed floorball players in Finland was 51,400 at the end of the year 2020. EräViikingit from Helsinki continues to be the biggest floorball club.

The amount of players with a purchased game pass were 50,961 at the end of the year 2020. When adding players that participate in the Finnish Floorball Federation’s different recreational tournaments and leagues, the number of licensed floorball players is 51,411. One year ago the number was around 59,000, out of which 55,065 had a game pass.

Traditionally in floorball in Finland, the number of licensed floorball players is smaller at the turn of the year compared to the end of the season. This is due to the fact that the teams recruit more players during the season and clubs also establish new recreational teams. During the 35 year history of floorball in Finland the sport has been used to gaining more players, but during the last two years the numbers have decreased.

According to the Finnish Floorball Federation’s Executive Director Pekka Ilmivalta measures are needed to renew the competition structures and to increase the number of players. Also the pandemic has had a negative effect on the number of floorball players:

– Since the spring of 2018, the growth in the number of floorball players has declined and the Covid-19 has increased this negative trend. Starting from next season, we will have to get on a clear growth path again, Pekka Ilmivalta says in the Finnish Floorball Federation’s press release.

EräViikingit continues as the biggest floorball club

At the end of the year the number of registered floorball clubs was 734. EräViikingi is still Finland’s biggest floorball club with 1,446 game passes by the end of the year 2020. Esport Oilers is on second place with 1,040 game passes ahead of Oulun Floorball Club with 967 game passes. There are 60 floorball clubs with over 200 licensed players.
