With the growing activity and development in sustainability the IFF has decided to take part in the Olympic Movement Carbon Initiative. The unique programme, launched in 2019, has inspired climate action by recognising the sustainability efforts of key sports organisations within the Olympic Movement.

This year, the award is open to both the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) numbering over 200 around the globe and the 77 International Sports Federations (IFs).

The initiative between Dow and the IOC incentivizes IFs and NOCs to plan and implement tangible climate actions in their operations. To be recognised, IFs and NOCs must be a part of the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework, which was launched by the IOC and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 2018, and are expected to present detailed data on their carbon reduction plans, requiring them to better understand and measure their annual carbon footprint.

The IFF decided to submit an application for the award to get an outside evaluation of their current work on fighting climate change since joining the Sports for Climate Action Framework in late 2019.

Recipients of the award will be announced November 6th at the annual IF Forum during the IOC Sustainability Session. Traditionally the event takes place in Lausanne but under the current circumstances everything is organised online.

As part of the recognition, the IFs and NOCs will receive carbon offsets. The awarded offsets include a diverse set of climate solutions, from conserving ecosystems and avoiding deforestation to energy efficiency and renewable energy. The projects delivering these offsets are implemented across multiple continents including the Americas, Africa and Asia, and comply with standards approved by the International Carbon Reduction and Offset Alliance (ICROA).
