The Men’s and Men’s U19 Euro Floorball Tour (EFT), which was planned to take place 16-18 October, has been cancelled due to the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections. The organiser, Swiss Floorball Association, informed about the decision yesterday evening.
The EFT would have been played with the Men’s and Men’s U19 teams from Switzerland, Sweden and Czech Republic in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The Swiss Floorball Association stress in their press release that the health of everyone involved comes first:
– We regret this cancellation very much, but in the current situation it would not have been justifiable to organise the event, says Swiss Floorball Association Secretary General Michael Zoss.
In the past few days, the coronavirus situation has deteriorated dramatically around the world. The number of infections have increased, which is why the governments in many countries have tightened the measures again. For example, a 30-day state of emergency was declared in Czech Republic a week ago. Sport events have been cancelled for two weeks starting from Monday this week and the Czech League is on hold for the next two weeks. In Sweden and Switzerland too, the number of new infections has recently increased. Travelling by plane represents an increased risk of infection for the players. In addition, the return journey would be uncertain: if a player would be infected in Switzerland, he would have to be quarantined in Switzerland for ten days. Sweden was also unable to guarantee that all players would receive approval from their clubs.
In the last few weeks the Swiss Floorball Association together with the local organising committee, IG Unihockey St. Gallen-Appenzell, and the city of St. Gallen have done everything possible to be able to host the international matches. The Swiss Floorball Association thanks everyone involved and in particular the local organising committee and the authorities in St. Gallen for their great support. Anyone who has bought tickets will receive a refund.
The Men’s and Men’s U19 EFT was the only international event that was planned to take place during October’s Internationals Weekend.
