The bronze medal match was played between the Czech Republic and Switzerland. The Czech Republic also played the bronze match in the 2019 World Cup where they failed to win a medal. History was repeated this year as well.

It was Switzerland that would open the match best. After eight minutes, the Swiss Corin Ruttiman scored 0-1 and two minutes later the same Ruttiman increased to 0-2, a result that lasted into the second period.

The Czechs got exactly the start they needed in the second period. Three minutes in they reduced the score to 1-2 and only 36 seconds later Vendula Berankova equalized to 2-2. Switzerland fought back to a 2-4 lead that ended the second.

In the third period, full speed ahead was required if the Czechs were to win a bronze medal today. But the all-too-experienced goalkeeper Lara Heine in Switzerland’s goal saved everything and it was instead Michelle Wiki who was able to hit the nail in the coffin 2-5. Switzerland wins the bronze and the Czech Republic finishes fourth in the 2021 World Cup.

– Now we will celebrate in the locker room where we can really let go of all our emotions after the match and then go out and meet all the fans who came from Switzerland, Tanja Stella tells about how to celebrate this bronze medal.

The Czech Republic has now finished four of the last five championships and the disappointment was great.

– I think my feelings are quite clear, obviously sad and disappointed. I know we can play much better than we did today, says Czech goalkeeper Jana Christianova after the final whistle.
