The opening game of the 2021 WFC in Uppsala was played between Singapore and Estonia. And it was a tight game where both opponents followed each other in the scoresheets before Estonia could score the deciding goal in the last minutes of play.
– It was a tough match. But it is of course great that we could score a deciding goal for our team. We where prepared for the game and we knew what to do. And everything worked, said Estonias Piret Puidak after the game.
The suspense in the air was high before the first faceoff in the WFC 2021 in Uppsala. Both Singapore and Estonia came out really aggressive so the spectators in IFU Arena got to witness a high and intensive first period.
Estonia was the team that opened the scoring in the first period when Kati Kutisaar scored the first goal of the WFC 2021. She was quickly followed by Kirk Pollisinksi who just minutes later gave Estonia a 2-0 lead heading into the second period. There Singapore mounted an impressive comeback and the result was 2-2 heading into the last period of the game.
With roughly nine minutes left Estonia retook the lead in the third period but Singapore quickly equalized. However, with six and a half minutes to go Estonia scored a game winning goal and took the first victory in the 2021 WFC.
– I was really excited to play here in Uppsala. Even though we lost our first game there is still a lot in us and we are going to prepare for the next two games aswell, said Singapores Michelle Lok after the game.
MVP for team Estonia was Kati Loid. MVP for team Singapore was Shermaine Goh.
