Situated between Lake Neuchâtel and the Jura mountains and dominated by the Château and the Collégiale, the WFC 2019 host city boasts a network of charming pedestrian streets that lead visitors from discovery to discovery.
Places to visit are Quai Ostervald, Passerelle de l’Utopie, lookout tower Chaumont, the education and research district, numerous fountains, fascinating museums, like the natural history museum, art and history museum with its Jaquet-Droz automata and the ethnographic museum.
Worth seeing is also the old town. The city of Neuchâtel is known for its yellow stone facades, known as “Pierre d’Hauterive”, which give its old town beautiful sunny tones, even in winter. The Laténium – Archaeological park and museum – explores 50,000 years of prehistory and history in a series of extraordinary settings. The narrow streets of the old town, sometimes paved, are warm and welcoming and host many restaurants, shops and craftsmen. The Place des Halles, the rue des Moulins, the Place du Banneret which leads to the castle are very photogenic places in the old town. When the world championship takes place, the old town will also be illuminated in the evening for the end of the year celebrations and a lovely market will be held on the beautiful Place du Coq d’Inde.
More recent accomplishments on the city’s outskirts round off the range of attractions. Perched high above Neuchâtel, a few steps away from the botanical garden, the Dürrenmatt Centre designed by architect Mario Botta is home to the famous author’s literary and pictorial work.
The new “Neuchâtel à la Belle Epoque” tours allow visitors to discover the old town through 10 unique experiences related to the Belle Epoque. For more information, go to www.neuchatelbelle-epoque.ch
