Last weekend USA floorball and San Francisco Floorball Club hosted the Golden Gate Cup competition, a 2 day floorball tournament involving 11 teams from across North America! The champions were from north of the border as the All-Canadian team lead by Canada Men’s national team captain Matt Smith took home the Golden Gate Cup beating NTFA (North Texas) in the final 6-1.
The Golden Gate Cup is an annual floorball tournament that takes place in San Francisco, California inviting teams from across the US and Canada to compete in one of the most competitive and highly rated floorball tournaments in North America!
This year 11 teams took part. These were:
All Canadian, So-Cal, Chicago Dogs, USA Men’s U19, Menlo Park, NTFA (North Texas), San Francisco, Colorado, Chicago Mad Dogs, Fresno Forza and the USA Women’s national team.
A round robin play took place on the Saturday before the Elimination round on Sunday. All Canadian won all 3 Round Robin matches although they were pushed to a close match against the USA U19’s whom they beat 5-4. In the B division Round Robin, hosts San Francisco went undefeated with 3 wins and a tie against 2nd placed Colorado.
Going into the elimination round, the quarterfinals matchups were won by San Francisco against Chicago Dogs, So Cal beating Colorado, All Canadian beating Menlo Park and NTFA overcoming the USA Men’s U19 team.
The Semifinals matchups didn’t go the way of the California teams with both San Francisco and So Cal losing respectively to All Canadian and NTFA, setting up a Canada-North Texas final.
All Canadian looked very strong throughout the tournament going unbeaten into the final against NTFA, who got revenge over So Cal in the semifinals after losing to them in the round robin. Captain Matt Smith led by example scoring 2 goals in the final with another 2 goals scored by Dalibor Morys to help the All Canadians to a 6-1 final win!
