The Floorball Association of Nigeria has started a talent hunt in schools across the country. The strategy is aimed at finding talented players and further developing floorball in Nigeria and Africa.
In connection with the planned activities of developing floorball in Nigeria and Africa, the association intends to reach out to younger players by going for talent hunts in schools. According to Henry Oluoma, Secretary General of the association, this programme will be carried out across state and federal levels:
— We hosted a tournament for different teams from four states in January and hope to host more tournaments in the near future including teams from all other states across the country. However, we noticed that the best way to approach young motivated players is through schools and we are currently coordinating with schools to schedule appointments for training sessions.
Oluoma said that coaches have been sent out to look for potential stars in the sport. He also revealed The Guardian that some companies in Germany have promised to support the cause by donating floorball equipment to Nigeria to aid rapid development of the game:
— It has been known to us that some of the challenges has been the unavailability of equipment and steps are underway to provide equipment to schools and locals for easy training sessions, Oluoma comments.
Nigerian men’s team won the Africa Floorball Cup in 2018 that took place in Abidjan, Côte d´Ivoire. They won the final against Burkina Faso 3-1. Nigeria participated in the event with seven players and conquered the Africa floorball scene. The association President, Ms. Edith Chinenye Mmaduka said they would organise a national championship within the next two months to select athletes to represent the country at the forthcoming African championship. Although Mmaduka blamed the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic for setting back the growth of the sport, she assured that all lost ground would be covered soon.
