In the Swedish Floorball Federation´s interview the Swedish Captain, Karolina Widar, who lifted the WFC trophy in 2007 tells about her feelings about the upcoming World Championships, which are going to be exceptional for her.
The WFC in Västerås are special as the Championships are played so close.
– I can almost see the Arena from home. As captain in a home WFC there will be more responsibility towards media and other persons and more focus than in a regular tournament, but the actual duties as team captain remain the same.
Is the feeling before the WFC 2009 different compared to 2007?
– I do not actually remember how it felt then but a WFC is always a WFC. Now when the WFC is played in December the focus on the Championships started already last summer and the WFC has been a goal throughout the Autumn. Previously when the WFC was played in May the focus was divided between WFC, League matches and the Play-offs. Now there is more focus on the World Championships than before and in addition the WFC is played in Sweden, which increases the attention.
Karolina Widar was one of the best players in the EuroFloorball Tour in Finland in the beginning of November, especially against Switzerland in the match, which she was able to turn by scoring two important goals. The formation with Widar, Elin Tjärnström and Victoria Wikström seemed like a WFC formation already in the EFT.
– We have played some matches together and we complete each other well and we have played good in most of the matches that we have played together. We will see how it will look in the WFC and if we can continue to play together or if there will be some changes, that I do not know yet, Karolina says.
– Elin is a hard working player and a good finisher and Victoria has great playing skills and game intelligence at the same time as she is strong, so we do complete each other well. I am the one who chats and directs a bit and all three of us like the game tempo to be high. It is usually full speed forwards when we play and we have been able to cause stress to our opponents.
Karolina Widar has been a part of the Swedish national team for a long time and played her first WFC in 2001. She has not yet made any final decisions concerning the continuation after the WFC.
– I will have to see how it feels after the season and if it still is fun to play. If I continue to play on the elite level feel that I can add something to the national team, I do not see a reason to say no.
The Swedish national team is right now on a WFC preparation camp in Karlstad and will play a match against Switzerland before the World Championships. The match, Sweden – Switzerland, will be played on the 3rd of December 2009 in the Bombardier Arena in Västerås.
