A new Under 19 WFC spectator record of 2 353 spectators were following the Sweden-Finland final in the Turku arena.
The match was tight for 20 minutes and Finland was a bit unlucky in the start, but in the second and third period it was no question about which was WFC´s best team, as the reigning champions took control of the game and won the final for the 3rd time in a row.
Finland was the first team to score when Ilari Talvitie found the net on power play. Then the Finns were a bit unlucky as a bouncing ball hit the Finnish defender, which resulted in an own goal.
The Swedes were playing quite aggressively giving high pressure, but this also opened good scoring opportunities for the Finns when they could get the ball passed the fore checkers.
Finland got two open scoring opportunities from the best scoring sector and could utilize the second, when Jere Oksanen found Casper Pfitzner in front of the goal, 2-1 for Finland.
In 14.42 Sweden could take advantage of another mistake by the Finnish defence and evened the score before the intermission.
Sweden had more ball control all through the second period as the Finns were backing down. The patient play making paid off when Jonas Ågren scored from the defender´s position and put Sweden into the lead for the first time.
Wilmer Viinamäki increased Sweden´s lead to two goals when playing 4 versus 4.
Sweden settled the match in the third period. Niklas Winroth put a loose ball in the goal and 5-2 was a fact and then the tournament´s scoring leader Henrik Stenberg increased his points to 21 (14+7).
Sweden could celebrate a 8-3 victory tonight and are the 2009 U19 Champions. Ilari Talvitie and Jonas Ågren were awarded as best players in the final.
