The upcoming WFC 2008 in Czech Republic are going to be historical and unique championships in two perspectives.
Firstly this is the first time that the Floorball Championships are to be played in December. Secondly the WFC 2008 are the last Championships to be played with 20 teams and an A- and B-division.
The IFF decided to change its competition calendar in 2007 in order to maximise the value of the competitions for its Member Associations. The changes in the International Competition Calendar will now be fully implemented when the main event of the year, the Men’s Floorball World Championships will start on Saturday the 6th.
The Adult WFC´s move to December seems to have been a good solution since a record amont of WFC 2008 matches will be televised around Europe and also a big number of tickets have been sold. The number of telvised matches is 17 at the moment. More information about TV matches found here.
2010 Men’s Floorball World Championships in Finland
The WFC “new style” will be implemented 2010 (men) and 2011 (women) and will consist of continental qualification tournaments and a final tournament with 16 teams. The Men’s WFC 2010 played in Finland will be played with 16 teams in four groups of four teams with the top seven teams from the A-division and the winner of B-division of the WFC 2008 automatically qualified to the Final round. The other eight teams have to qualify through continental tournaments.
This system will be valid for 2010 and 2011 and will be reviewed continuously.
The WFC Quota system for 2010
The quota for the participating teams by continent shall always be based on the number of registered teams, using a deviation factor of 16 equaling the number of participating teams, and thereby determining the continental quota. The WFC 2010/2011 qualifications are played in continental tournaments or if there are less than three teams based on a mutual agreement.
The number of qualification tournaments has to be appointed well in advance and the qualifications shall be played during the first week of February the same year, with the ballot for the WFC to be made directly after the qualifications.
