A sudden death goal settled the final match, when Julia Suter scored the golden goal after 63.23 minutes of play.
The final was a really amazing match in the full arena in Wolsztyn with 600 spectators when the best teams of the tournament challenged each other. Sweden, with the widest troop of very skilful players and Switzerland with the quickest players, who are brilliant in finishing counter attacks.
Switzerland got an excellent start to the match as Julia Suter finished a nice counter attack and scored the first for Switzerland. Sweden fore checked aggressively, but whenever the Swiss got the ball past the fore checkers they could create very dangerous attacks. Switzerland was also better in finishing the attacks and got into a 3-0 lead before Sweden scored their first goal. Just before the end of the first period Rahel Kaltenrieder could increase the Swiss lead to 4-1. The Swiss then experienced a setback when one of their best players, Alexandra Frick, got injured and could not continue playing.
The second period seemed to become the period of the goalkeepers as both goalies could keep their goals clean for 15 minutes. Sweden however controlled the game and when Sara Helin was freed after a nice pass by Anna Wiman she could reduce the Swiss lead to 2-4.
Sweden was chasing Switzerland in the third period and the Swedes made a great effort and came back from 5-3 to 5-4, 6-4 to 6-5, 7-5 to 7-6 and finally the equalising goal was scored by Johanna Holmbom in 59.49 and the game was to continue on over time.
Sweden had the best opportunities on over time, but all of a sudden the quick Julia Suter got to a good scoring opportunity and settled the final, 8-7 for Switzerland.
The key to the Switzerland´s success was the Swiss team´s speed in changing direction, which gave them the ability challenge the technical Swedes and took them to the first ever WU19 championship victory. Switzerland has two bronze medals from the previous WU19 Championships in 2004 and 2006.
Julia Suter (2+2) was awarded best player of Switzerland and Emelie Wibron best player of Sweden
