Team Slovakia lost the group match versus Spain with one goal, but in the final the whole Slovakian team played a tremendous game. With the great support of the home crowd, Slovakia won the final match with 6-2 and are the new C-division champions.
A record amount of 750 spectators were watching the final in Bratislava and the atmosphere was great.
The first goal was scored by Jozef Velcicky, as his slapshot surprised the Spanish goalkeeper. There were very good scoring opportunities for both teams, but the Slovakians used their chances better.
Spain got their best chance with a penalty shot and two minutes penalty, but the Slovakian goalie, Adam Kalcok, was not surprised. Twice the ball almost went over the goal line, but Adam Kalcok remained undefeated in the goal. Then Slovakia increased their lead. The 0-2 and 0-3 goals were results of nicely executed free hit situations.
Spain got their second penalty shot opportunity in the second period, but no goal. During the following two minutes penalty Ricardo Iglesias scored the first for Spain and the Spanish team was in the match again. In 33.53 Tomas Filadelfi then took Slovakia to a three goal lead again.
Jan Segla and Denis Granec increased the Slovakian lead to 5-1 and 6-1 in the third period and even though Spain made some line-up changes and fore checked more aggressively, Slovakia did not have a problem to hang on to their 6-2 lead.
Team Slovakia has improved the performance steadily. In 2004 C-division Slovakia was fourth and in 2006 third.
